The Valgrind distribution currently includes six production-quality tools: a memory error detector, two thread error detectors, a cache and branch-prediction profiler, a call-graph generating cache profiler, and a heap profiler. It also includes two experimental tools: a heap/stack/global array overrun detector, and a SimPoint basic block vector generator. It runs on the following platforms: X86/Linux, AMD64/Linux, PPC32/Linux, PPC64/Linux, and X86/Darwin (Mac OS X). 

Valgrind uses dynamic binary instrumentation, so you don't need to modify, recompile or relink your applications. Just prefix your command line with valgrind and everything works. Valgrind works with programs written in any language, be they compiled, just-in-time compiled, or interpreted. The Valgrind tools are largely aimed at programs written in C and C++, because programs written in these languages tend to have the most bugs! But it can, for example, be used to debug and profile systems written in a mixture of languages. Valgrind has been used on programs written partly or entirely in C, C++, Java, Perl, Python, assembly code, Fortran, Ada, and many others.

Memprof can also do very lightweight function call tracing to help you figure out which system calls, and library calls your code causes. Ruby memory profiler similar to bleak_house, but without patches to the Ruby VM. Flame graphs are a visualization of hierarchical data, created to visualize stack traces of profiled software so that the most frequent code-paths to be identified quickly and accurately. It basically visualizes a collection of stack traces (aka call stacks), shown as an adjacency diagram with an inverted icicle layout. Flame graphs are commonly used to visualize CPU profiler output, where stack traces are collected using sampling.

Flamegraphs are used to visualize where time is being spent in your program. Many times per second, the threads in a program are interrupted and the current location in your code (based on the thread's instruction pointer) is recorded, along with the chain of functions that were called to get there. This is called stack sampling. These samples are then processed and stacks that share common functions are added together. Then an SVG is generated showing the call stacks that were measured, widened to the proportion of all stack samples that contained them.

Silk is a live profiling and inspection tool for the Django framework. Silk intercepts and stores HTTP requests and database queries before presenting them in a user interface for further inspection. t records things like Time taken, Num. queries, Time spent on queries, Request/Response headers, Request/Response bodies and so on.
 
Silk also intercepts SQL queries that are generated by each request. We can get a summary on things like the tables involved, number of joins and execution time

Callgrind uses runtime instrumentation via the Valgrind framework for its cache simulation and call-graph generation. This way, even shared libraries and dynamically opened plugins can be profiled. The data files generated by Callgrind can be loaded into KCachegrind for browsing the performance results. But there is also a command line tool in the package to get ASCII reports from data files without the need to use KCachegrind. KCachegrind is able to visualize output of other profilers like OProfile, a system-wide profiler for Linux using statistical sampling with hardware performance counters. There also exist converters for profiling output of Python, PHP and PERL.

The data files generated by Callgrind can be loaded into KCachegrind for browsing the performance results. This is a GUI/Visualization tool.

This library help to track down memory leak. It worked very well because it adds the process id and memory usage in with EVERY single line logged and at the end of each rails request. This way, if you have a cluster, you can monitor each process and scroll through your logs and watch the memory. If it suddenly starts to jump you can look at the request and at least you have a starting point. You can checkout the code for that specific controller action and try to narrow it down.
