Snort is an open source network intrusion prevention and detection system (IDS/IPS) developed by Sourcefire. Snort can perform protocol analysis and content searching/matching. It can be used to detect a variety of attacks and probes, such as buffer overflows, stealth port scans, CGI attacks, SMB probes, OS fingerprinting attempts, and much more.
 
Snort has a real-time alerting capability as well, incorporating alerting mechanisms for syslog, a user specified file, a UNIX socket, or WinPopup messages to Windows clients. Snort has three primary uses: a straight packet sniffer like tcpdump, a packet logger (useful for network traffic debugging, etc), or a full-blown network intrusion prevention system.

Moloch augments your current security infrastructure to store and index network traffic in standard PCAP format, providing fast, indexed access. TCPDump, a powerful command-line packet analyzer; and libpcap, a portable C/C++ library for network traffic capture. It prints out a description of the contents of packets on a network interface that match the boolean expression. The Packet Capture library provides a high level interface to packet capture systems. All packets on the network, even those destined for other hosts, are accessible through this mechanism.

DPDK is a set of libraries and drivers for fast packet processing. It was designed to run on any processors. The first supported CPU was Intel x86 and it is now extended to IBM Power 8, EZchip TILE-Gx and ARM. These libraries can be used to  receive and send packets within the minimum number of CPU cycles (usually less than 80 cycles), develop fast packet capture algorithms (tcpdump-like) and run third-party fast path stacks.

ngrok is a reverse proxy that creates a secure tunnel between from a public endpoint to a locally running web service. ngrok captures and analyzes all traffic over the tunnel for later inspection and replay. You can give this URL to anyone to allow them to try out a web site you're developing without doing any deployment.

Bro is a powerful network analysis framework that is much different from the typical intrusion detection system you may know. Bro provides a comprehensive platform for more general network traffic analysis as well. 
 
Bro is a passive, open-source network traffic analyzer. It is primarily a security monitor that inspects all traffic on a link in depth for signs of suspicious activity. More generally, however, Bro supports a wide range of traffic analysis tasks even outside of the security domain, including performance measurements and helping with trouble-shooting.
 
Bro comes with built-in functionality for a range of analysis and detection tasks, including extracting files from HTTP sessions, detecting malware by interfacing to external registries, reporting vulnerable versions of software seen on the network, identifying popular web applications, detecting SSH brute-forcing, validating SSL certificate chains, and much more.

Windows Packet Divert (WinDivert) is a user-mode packet interception library for Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10. WinDivert enables user-mode capturing/modifying/dropping of network packets
sent to/from the Windows network stack.  In summary, WinDivert can Capture network packets, Filter/drop network packets, Sniff network packets, (re)inject network packets, modify network packets. It can be used to implement user-mode packet filters, sniffers, firewalls, NATs, VPNs, IDSs, tunneling applications, etc.

netsniff-ng is a free Linux networking toolkit, a Swiss army knife for your daily Linux network plumbing if you will. Its gain of performance is reached by zero-copy mechanisms, so that on packet reception and transmission the kernel does not need to copy packets from kernel space to user space and vice versa. 
 
 netsniff-ng is a fast network analyzer based on packet mmap(2) mechanisms. It can record pcap files to disc, replay them and also do an offline and online analysis. Capturing, analysis or replay of raw 802.11 frames are supported as well. pcap files are also compatible with tcpdump or Wireshark traces. netsniff-ng processes those pcap traces either in scatter-gather I/O or by mmap(2) I/O.

It aims to be the fundamental high-level building block for doing practical, real world network data analysis in Python. Additionally, it has the broader goal of becoming a common network data processing framework for researchers providing data reproducibility across experiments. NFStream extracts +90 flow features and can convert it directly to a pandas Dataframe or a CSV file.
