Ganglia is a scalable distributed monitoring system for high-performance computing systems such as clusters and Grids. It is based on a hierarchical design targeted at federations of clusters. It leverages widely used technologies such as XML for data representation, XDR for compact, portable data transport, and RRDtool for data storage and visualization. 
 
 It has been used to link clusters across university campuses and around the world and can scale to handle clusters with 2000 nodes. It relies on a multicast-based listen/announce protocol to monitor state within clusters. The ganglia system comprises two unique daemons, a PHP-based web front-end.

Nagios monitors your entire IT infrastructure to ensure systems, applications, services, and business processes are functioning properly. It provides centralized view of entire monitored IT infrastructure. In the event of a failure, Nagios can alert technical staff of the problem, allowing them to begin remediation processes before outages affect business processes, end-users or customers. 

 Nagios could be extended via Plugins. It is possible to monitor any probes (temperature, alarms...), which is capable of sending data to specific plugin. It has web and mobile interface for viewing current network status, notifications, problem history, log files, etc.

Cacti is a web based front end tool to generate graphs for RRD files. Cacti allows a user to poll services at predetermined intervals and graph the resulting data. It is generally used to graph time-series data of metrics such as CPU load and network bandwidth utilization. It has built-in SNMP support to receive management data from various devices.

Zabbix is an enterprise-class open source distributed monitoring solution. It is highly scaleable, capable of monitoring more than 100,000 devices and servers. A Zabbix agent can also be installed on UNIX and Windows hosts to monitor statistics such as CPU load, network utilization, disk space, etc. It also supports agentless monitoring via SNMP, TCP and ICMP. It monitors performance in real time and alers users via mail, SMS, Jabber (XMPP) clients. It supports variety of database including Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite. Web based interface to visualize the data and generate reports and stats.

Collectl benchmarks and monitors system health and determine what your system was doing at some time in the past. You can choose to monitor any of a broad set of subsystems which currently include buddyinfo, cpu, disk, inodes, infiniband, lustre, memory, network, nfs, processes, quadrics, slabs, sockets and tcp. 

Collectl could report interrupts at the CPU level. It writes information to the rolling log file and it is also capable to export the data to different formats like s-expression, plot format etc which could be imported in different application to draw graph.

collectd is a daemon which collects system performance statistics periodically and provides mechanisms to store the values in a RRD files.  collectd utilizes a data push model. The data is collected and sent (pushed) to a multicast group or server. Thus there is no central instance which queries any values. collectd is able to handle any number of hosts, from one to several hundred.
